Earlier this week, it was reported that a patient with a history of foreign travel had contracted the XE variant, but the Health Ministry denied the report, stating that the "present evidence does not suggest the presence of the new variant."

"Samples from Gujarat have been sent to NCDC, but from what we can tell, this fits the definition of XE better than the Mumbai one," the earlier-mentioned source said on condition of anonymity.

"The patient was a 67-year-old man from Mumbai who was visiting Vadodara with his wife," said Dr Devesh Patel, the Medical Officer for Health in Vadodara. When they arrived, they checked into a hotel, and the man developed symptoms such as a fever. They took a Covid-19 test, and when the results were positive, they returned to Mumbai, where they were subjected to strict home quarantine. In Vadodara, he didn't meet anyone."
