GLUTEN ALLERGY TEST

DESCRIPTION – in the skin-prick test, a small amount of a liquid containing wheat protein is placed on the back or forearm, which is then pricked with a small, sterile probe to allow the liquid to seep into the skin. If a raised, reddish spot forms within 15 to 20 minutes, that can indicate an allergy.

METHODOLOGY – quantitative immunoCAP fluorescent enzyme immunoassay

TURN AROUND TIME – 1-3 days

SPECIMEN REQUIERED –

PATIENT PREPARATION – multiple patient encounters should be avoided

COLLECT – serum separator tube. Multiple specimen tubes should be avoided

SPECIMEN PREAPARATION – separate the serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 ml of serum plus 0.1 ml for each additional allergen to transport tube

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated

STABILITY – ambient: 48 hours; refrigerated: 2 weeks; frozen: 1 year

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONhemolyzed, icteric or lipemic specimens

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
