BOOK IRON STUDIES
DESCRIPTION – iron studies are blood test that tell you much iron is in your and in other cells. Less iron or overload of iron could signal issues. Iron studies test include serum iron, ferretin and transferrin.

METHODOLOGY – quantitative spectrophotometry

TURN AROUND TIME – within 24 hours

PATIENT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – plasma separator or serum separator tube or green (sodium heparin)

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated

STABILITY – ambient: 4 days; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 3 months

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – grossly hemolyzed specimens. EDTA plasma

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
