Neisseria Gonorrhoae Detection byReal time PCR Urethral discharge

DESCRIPTION – Neisseria gonorrhea is a bacterial pathogen responsible for gonorrhea and various sequelae that tend to occur when asymptomatic infection ascends within the genital tract or disseminates to distal tissues.

CLINICAL UTILITY – used for diagnosis of gonorrhea

METHODOLOGY – polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

TURN AROUND TIME – 6 days

PATIENT PREPARATION – multi-test swab or thin-prep collection: patient must be 14 years of age

COLLECT – vaginal, throat or rectal specimen collected with pink swab

SPECIMEN PREPARATION

Swab

– place swab in swab specimen transport tube, break shaft off at score-line then recap tube

Urine

– transfer 2 ml urine within 24 hours

Thin-prep

– transfer 1 ml vortex thin-prep

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – refrigerated

STABILITY

Multi-test or unisex swab

– ambient: 2 months; refrigerated: 2 months; frozen: 1 year

Urine specimen transport tube

– ambient: 1 month; refrigerated: 1 month; frozen: 3 months

Specimen transfer tube

– ambient: 2 weeks; refrigerated: 1 month; frozen: 1 year

Thin-prep

– ambient: 1 month; refrigerated: 1 month
