Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) Panel

DESCRIPTION – the MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome) standard FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridization) panel identifies the most common cytogenetic abnormalities associated with favorable, intermediate and poor risk according to IPSS guidelines.

CLINICAL UTILITY – myelodysplastic syndrome describes a group of hematopoietic disorders resulting in ineffective production of one or more of the myeloid cell lineages which increases the risk for transformation to AML monosomy 5/ del 5q, monosomy 7/del 7q, trisomy 8, del 20q, monosomy 13/del 13q, monosomy 17/del 17q, MLL break apart translocations

METHODOLOGY – fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) or next generation sequencing (NGS)

TURN AROUND TIME – 5 days

PATEINT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – non diluted bone marrow aspirate

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – 3-4 ml bone marrow or peripheral blood in green top (sodium heparin) or lavender top (EDTA) tube

STORAGE /TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – 2-8 degrees C (with cold pack) and transport within 72 hours

STABILITY – ambient: 48 hours; refrigerated: 48 hours
