del(5q)

DESCRIPTION – chromosomal abnormalities resulting in deletion at 5q or monosomy of 5 can occur in both acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic leukemia (MDL). Genes in the deleted region include NPM1, APC and CTNNA1. Deletions at 5q are also common in therapy related AML/MDS. These abnormalities can have diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic implications

METHODOLOGY – fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)

TURN AROUND TIME – 7 days

PATIENT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – non-diluted bone marrow aspirate

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – 3- ml bone marrow or peripheral blood in sodium heparin or EDTA vacutainers

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – 2-8 degrees C (with cold pack) and transport within 72 hours

STABILITY – ambient: 48 hours; refrigerated: 48 hours

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITIONS – frozen and clotted specimens
