DESCRIPTION – the Philadelphia chromosome arising from the reciprocal t (9;22) translocation is found in more than 90% of chronic myeloid leukemia patients and results in the formation of the chimeric fusion gene BCR-ABL
METHODOLOGY – polymerase chain reaction (PCR)

PATIENT PREPARATION –
COLLECT – lavender (EDTA) or bone marrow or extracted RNA
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – transport 5 ml whole blood or 3 ml bone marrow. Specimens must be received within 48 hours of collection due to liability of RNA. Transport 40 micro-liter RNA
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – whole blood or bone marrow should be critically refrigerated and extracted RNA should be critically frozen
STABILITY – ambient: 1 hour; refrigerated: 48 hours; frozen: indefinitely (extracted RNA)
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – serum, plasma, CSF, extracted DNA, clotted specimens
