Hepatitis G Virus (HGV) HGV-RNAdetection by PCR
DESCRIPTION - HGV is a single-stranded RNA virus classified in the Flaviviridae family; the virus shares 27 percent homology with hepatitis C virus (HCV). The name HGV denotes two independent viruses: HGV and GBV-C. The HGV has not yet been isolated. The liver is not a significant site of replication.
METHODOLOGY – quantitative polymerase chain reaction

SPECIMEN REQUIERED –
COLLECT – serum separator tube or lavender (EDTA)
SPECIMEN PREPARATION – separate from cells. Transfer 1 ml of serum to transport tube
STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – frozen
STABILITY – ambient: 24 hours; refrigerated: 1 week; frozen: 1 year
UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – heparinized specimens
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS – clinical history is mandatory
