DESCRIPTION – AFB detection of DNA is done by using real time PCR. AFB testing can detect different types of acid-fast bacilli, but it is most commonly used to diagnose active tuberculosis (TB) infection

METHODOLOGY – real time polymerase chain reaction (real time PCR)

TURN AROUND TIME – 4 days

PATIENT PREPARATION –

COLLECT – actively growing organism, in pure culture

SPECIMEN PREPARATION – place each specimen individually in a sealed container and transport with pure culture on solid or liquid media

STORAGE/TRANSPORT TEMPERATURE – room temperature

STABILITY – ambient: 2 weeks; refrigerated: 2 weeks and frozen: 2 weeks

UNACCEPTABLE CONDITION – mixed culture or non-viable organisms
